Winery R.H. Coutier

Champagne R.H. Coutier is a historic family-owned winery rooted for five generations in the Grand Cru village of Ambonnay, located in the southern part of the Montagne de Reims. The vineyards stretch across south- and southeast-facing slopes on predominantly chalky soils, a key element in giving the wines structure, minerality, and elegance. The estate covers 9.30 hectares of vineyards divided into 40 parcels, with an average vine age of 38 years. This area of Champagne is renowned for Pinot Noir, the dominant grape variety on the estate as well. However, Champagne R.H. Coutier represents a significant exception: one-third of the vineyard area is planted with Chardonnay. This visionary decision was introduced in 1948 by Henri Coutier, one of the first growers to plant Chardonnay in Ambonnay. Since then, the family has continued this tradition, convinced that Chardonnay brings finesse, elegance, and balance to their blends. Since 1981, the winery has been led by Nathalie Coutier and René Coutier, joined in 2014 by Antoine Coutier, the fifth generation of the family, now fully involved in the production of Champagne R.H. Coutier wines. The maison’s production philosophy can be summarized in one simple yet rigorous principle: “Less is best.” The goal is to preserve and enhance the purest expression of the terroir, intervening as little as possible both in the vineyard and in the cellar. Respect for the environment has always been a priority. Since 2020, the winery has undertaken an even more demanding path by beginning the process of obtaining AB Certification organic certification. The year 2023 marked a major milestone: the first fully certified organic harvest under the AB standard. Today, Champagne R.H. Coutier is synonymous with authentic, precise, and terroir-driven Champagne, capable of combining family tradition, contemporary vision, and deep respect for nature.
